Jade Brigade do it again claiming undefeated Paul Roos scalp

The Jade Brigade have done it. Stellenberg have claimed the scalp of undefeated Paul Roos Gymnasium, stunning the Stellenbosch powerhouse 20-10 in a pulsating encounter that saw brutal forward exchanges, yellow cards galore, and a second-half comeback that will echo through the stands for years to come. Stellenberg have now beaten, Paarl Gim, Grey College and Paul Roos. The cream of South African schoolboy rugby.

Paul Roos arrived at Stellenberg unbeaten and confident. They left with their perfect record in tatters, undone by a relentless Stellenberg side that refused to buckle despite trailing for most of the match.

First-half dominance meets desperate defence

From the opening whistle, Stellenberg set their stall out with ferocious intent. They ran hard, carrying with venom as they tried to turn the match into a frenetic battlefield. The early exchanges were dominated by a mammoth scrum battle, with both packs desperate for ascendancy but achieving little more than a steady stream of penalties.

The Jade Brigade looked dangerous in the 12th minute when Daniel Steffen made a searing break from a powerful Stellenberg maul, eating up metres before being hauled down just short. But a crucial handling error in the next phase gifted Paul Roos possession, and Travis Pheiffer pounced, kicking through and gathering brilliantly to launch a counter-attack.

Paul Roos made them pay. In the 14th minute, Stef de Villiers barrelled over from close range after the visitors went through the phases methodically. Their forwards did the grunt work, softening up the defence before De Villiers hit a short line with purpose. 7-0.

The kicking duel between Pheiffer and Stellenberg’s Van Biljon became a feature of the half, both flyhalves hoisting towering bombs and searching for grass. Defence reigned supreme as both sides threw bodies on the line.

Pheiffer extended the lead in the 29th minute with a penalty. 10-0. Paul Roos were getting the better of the territorial battle, with Pheiffer nailing two perfectly judged 50-22s to pin Stellenberg deep. The visitors were also winning the crucial breakdown contests, but the Jade Brigade clung on with desperate, scrambling defence.

The tide turns – and Paul Roos see yellow

The second half began with Paul Roos down to 14 men after the referee lost patience with repeated infringements. Suddenly, the momentum shifted.

Stellenberg marched upfield, winning penalty after penalty as Paul Roos’s discipline crumbled. In the 44th minute, Ralton Rhode crossed for the Jade Brigade after patient build-up play created space out wide. 10-5. Game on.

Three minutes later, Paul Roos were down to 13 men with a second yellow card. Though it was a brief stint before the first card expired, the damage was done. Stellenberg’s maul, a weapon all match long, became unstoppable. Juvan Burden was superhuman in the lineouts, dominating the aerial battle.

To their credit, Paul Roos refused to surrender. They adapted brilliantly, cutting off Stellenberg’s second pass to neutralise the overlap. Christiaan le Roux became a menace at the breakdown, pilfering crucial ball to relieve pressure.

But discipline, or lack thereof, continued to haunt the visitors. In the 64th minute, another yellow card left them down to 14 again. A minute later, Burden crashed over from a quick tap penalty. 10-10.

Van Biljon then produced a monster 50-22, capitalising on the momentum that had swung decisively towards the Jade Brigade.

The final blow

With three minutes remaining and the match hanging in the balance, Stellenberg struck the decisive blow. The forwards went to work close to the line, and tighthead prop Janu van Deventer buckled the Paul Roos defence, powering over for a crucial score. 17-10. The Jade Brigade led for the first time, and the home crowd erupted.

Van Biljon added a penalty in the dying moments to seal a famous 20-10 victory.

Burden and captain fantastic Yanos Molnar were colossal for Stellenberg, leading from the front in a performance full of heart and steel. Paul Roos will rue their ill discipline, but on this day, the Jade Brigade simply refused to be denied.

Unbeaten runs are there to be broken. On Saturday, Stellenberg did exactly that.
