The men from the Cape have done it again. Shortly after toppling Paarl Gimnasium, Stellenberg have claimed another massive scalp, edging Grey College 26-21 in a bruising encounter that had everything.
From the opening whistle, both sides announced their intentions. Grey College brought their trademark attacking flair, probing for gaps and looking to unleash their dangerous backline. Stellenberg’s response? Bring the thunder. The Capetonians decided early that if Grey wanted to dance, they’d need to survive the storm first.
Magic from Mgedezi
The 18th minute produced a moment of pure brilliance. Van Biljon hung a towering bomb into the Stellenberg 22, and Lamla Mgedezi rose to claim it under pressure. What happened next defied logic. Mgedezi conjured space where none existed, beating defender after defender with footwork that left the Stellenberg scramble defence grasping at shadows. His perfectly timed offload found Jonathan Drysdale in support, who crashed over for the opening try. Grey College 7, Stellenberg 0.
Stellenberg immediately tested Grey’s aerial prowess. The men from Grey answered emphatically.
The maul monsters strike
But Stellenberg had another weapon in their arsenal. In the 21st minute, they unleashed a vicious maul that bulldozed through Grey’s defensive line. Yanos Molnar touched down to narrow the gap to 7-5. The frantic first quarter was living up to its billing.
Stellenberg’s set-piece dominance began to tell. Their pack looked to bully Grey at every opportunity, and in the 26th minute, their physicality paid dividends. A cleverly executed maul powered towards the Grey line, and when the defence illegally collapsed it, referee awarded a penalty try. Stellenberg 12, Grey College 7.
Grey’s task became harder when they were reduced to 14 men, but flyhalf Christoff Crous kept his composure, slotting a penalty later in the half to cut the deficit to 12-10. Just before the halftime hooter, Crous stepped up again, bisecting the uprights to snatch back the lead. Grey College 13, Stellenberg 12. The half had flashed by in a blur of intensity.
The second stanza brought no let-up in tempo. Both sides threw everything at each other, every ruck a battle, every collision carrying intent. Crous extended Grey’s advantage with another three-pointer , 16-12 and crucially, the Bloemfontein pack was standing toe-to-toe with Stellenberg. They refused to be bullied, matching the Capetonians in the physical exchanges.
Then came the sucker punch. In the 52nd minute, Stellenberg showed they had more than just forward power. Ralton Rhode ran a beautiful inside line, perfectly timed off a variation of an 8-9-14 pattern, slicing through the Grey defence. Stellenberg 19, Grey College 16.
Moments later, Stellenberg’s maul proved unstoppable once more. Seth Coetze dotted down after another driving effort that Grey simply couldn’t repel. The scoreboard now read 26-16, and the men from the Cape appeared to have one hand on a famous victory.
Grey’s late surge
But Grey College don’t know when they’re beaten. In the 67th minute, Mgedezi produced more magic, fixing two defenders before delivering an exquisite offload. JG Horn gratefully accepted the gift, racing away to score. At 26-21 with time running out, Grey’s fire had been well and truly lit.
One minute remained. Stellenberg needed to hold. Grey threw everything at them, searching desperately for the match-winning score. But the Stellenberg defence held firm, bodies on the line, refusing to yield.
When the final siren sounded, Stellenberg erupted. They had done it. Two giant-killings in quick succession – first Paarl Gimnasium, now Grey College.
For Stellenberg, this victory confirms they’re not just participants in schoolboy rugby’s elite tier, they’re genuine contenders.
