Lightning couldn’t stop them. Neither could a spirited Durbanville fightback. Affies powered to a 24-13 victory on a dramatic Pretoria night where Mother Nature briefly interrupted proceedings, but the home side’s clinical finishing ultimately proved the difference.

The Pretoria powerhouse opened the scoring through Reubenne Vlok, who ran a perfect short line to crash through Durbanville’s defensive line. The lock’s powerful carry and dive set the tone. Affies 7, Durbanville 0.

Nine minutes in, Affies showcased their attacking intelligence. Durbanville had deployed a high press, looking to suffocate Affies at source. But the home side shifted it wide with pace and precision, exploiting the space out wide. Joshua Gouws found himself in acres of room and simply walked over for the easiest try he’ll score all season. At 12-0, Affies were in complete control.

Durbanville needed to respond, and they clawed back three points through a penalty to make it 12-3. More importantly, the Capetonians refocused their approach. They targeted Affies’ breakdown with renewed aggression, slowing down the home side’s ball and disrupting their rhythm. The pressure began to tell.

Still, Affies remained dangerous. They attacked from everywhere, probing for weaknesses, looking to strike from any position on the field. The halftime scoreboard read 12-3, but both sides knew there was plenty of rugby left to play.

Affies emerged from the sheds with intent. Hard, uncompromising forward carries smashed into contact, generating quick ball. A sharp change of direction caught Durbanville scrambling, and suddenly there was space in the corner. Dandre Brink, Affies’ pacey winger, needed no second invitation. He flew down the touchline to dot down. Affies 19, Durbanville 3.

But Durbanville weren’t done. Not by a long shot.

In the 39th minute, Malherbe Louw ignited a fire within the visitors. After setting up multiple phases deep in Affies’ 22, probing and testing the defensive line, Louw powered over from close range. The conversion made it 19-10, and suddenly Durbies were staging a comeback.

Another penalty followed. At 19-13, with time still on the clock, this match was very much alive. The traveling support found their voices. Durbanville sensed blood.

But Affies won’t surrender their fortress easily, especially under lights in Pretoria. They launched a devastating counter-attack that showcased everything dangerous about this side. Reuben Venter made huge meters, drawing defenders before delivering a perfectly timed offload. Reubenne Vlok was the beneficiary, crashing over for his second try of the evening. At 24-13, Affies had put the result beyond doubt.

When the final whistle sounded, Affies had secured the victory, but Durbanville could hold their heads high. They fought hard throughout, adapted their game plan when needed, and refused to surrender even when the deficit looked insurmountable.
