Klerksdorp Hoërskool has appointed former Cheetahs captain Pieter Jansen van Vuren as their new director of rugby in a homecoming that could transform the school’s rugby fortunes. The old boy, who hung up his boots in June after a distinguished professional career, is relishing the opportunity to give back to the institution that launched his journey to the top.
The appointment follows Hans Grobler’s decision to decline the position, opting instead to take the head of sport role at Duineveld for personal reasons. Klerksdorp wasted no time securing a replacement with serious pedigree, and a deep emotional connection to the school.
Jansen van Vuren matriculated from Klerksdorp in 2009 before embarking on a professional career that took him across South Africa and into Europe. He represented Tuks, the Bulls, Lions, Griquas, Pumas and French club Biarritz before finishing his playing days at the Cheetahs, where he captained the Free State outfit with distinction.
Now, the 35-year-old is channelling that wealth of experience into building a rugby programme capable of competing with South Africa’s elite schools.
“My vision is to establish a top-level school programme that consistently competes with the top rugby schools in the country, also to develop players and get them ready for the professional ranks,” Jansen van Vuren said. “I believe there is unbelievable potential here.”
His credentials speak for themselves. A career spanning multiple franchises and codes exposes you to different coaching philosophies, training methodologies and cultures. Playing in France adds another dimension entirely.
But perhaps more importantly, he’s one of their own. The school emphasised that connection in their announcement, describing Jansen van Vuren as someone who “poured his sweat on this very field” and has been “an excellent ambassador for the school.”
“We are excited about Pieter’s appointment. He has been exposed to a broad range of rugby structures but also an old boy he has a connection to the local community,” the school said in a statement. “We wish him all the best for the coming season.”
That local connection matters. Old boys returning to schools often bring a passion that outsiders simply cannot match. They understand the culture, the community, and what makes the school tick. Jansen van Vuren doesn’t need a roadmap.
Whether he can deliver on his ambitious vision remains to be seen, but Klerksdorp rugby has just acquired a director with the credentials, connections and hunger to make it happen.
