The dream homecoming will not be. Hans Grobler, the highly-rated French-based coach who was appointed Director of Rugby and 1st XV head coach at Klerksdorp Hoërskool just weeks ago, has decided not to make the journey from France to the North West town. The would-be director is reportedly considering an offer from elsewhere, and according to Grobler himself, he’s also weighing up the option of remaining in France entirely.
It’s a devastating blow for a school that had pinned its hopes on the coach to lead a complete rebuilding project after a disastrous 2026 season saw the 1st XV win just three matches and suffer the ignominy of relegation from the Virseker Noordvaal Plate to the Shield division.

Grobler, who was announced in the role on 7 October and was due to arrive in Klerksdorp in December, admitted the decision wasn’t easy, but ultimately came down to doing what’s best for his career.
“I feel bad about leaving Klerksdorp in the lurch, it is not what I wanted, but I need to do what is best for me,” Grobler said.
It’s an honest admission, but one that leaves Klerksdorp Hoërskool scrambling to salvage their rebuilding plans with the 2027 season rapidly approaching.
The appointment that promised so much
When Klerksdorp announced Grobler’s appointment just over a month ago, it felt like the perfect marriage of ambition and expertise.

The stated goal was promotion back to the Virseker Noordvaal Plate by 2028. Ambitious? Absolutely. But with Grobler’s European coaching experience and understanding of what excellence requires, it felt achievable.
Now? It’s all up in smoke.
Where to from here?
Klerksdorp Hoërskool now faces a brutal reality: they’re back to square one with the 2027 season looming. Finding a replacement of Grobler’s calibre won’t be easy, particularly this late in the planning cycle.
Do they promote from within, appointing someone who knows the school culture but might lack the elite-level experience they were seeking? Do they scramble to find another overseas-based South African coach willing to return home? Do they look locally within the North West province for a proven school rugby operator?
