Axe drops as EG Jansen, Klerksdorp and Eldoraigne all relegated

The final whistle has blown on the Virseker Noordvaal competition’s round robin phase, and whilst the playoffs promise fireworks for those still standing, four schools are nursing the cruel sting of relegation as the guillotine drops on their campaigns.

With promotion battles raging across the Bowl, Shield and Plate divisions, the relegation picture has crystallised with brutal clarity – and for some proud rugby programmes, the descent begins now.

Cup Division: Dr. EG Jansen’s nightmare season ends in demotion

In what’s been one of the tightest Cup division races in recent memory, Dr. EG Jansen have been condemned to Plate rugby in 2027 despite sitting just four points adrift of safety. Waterkloof, who occupy the survival spot above them, still have their 1st XV competing in the semi-finals with precious log points up for grabs, whilst Jansen’s season has run dry of opportunities.

It’s been a campaign to forget for the men from Boksburg. Their struggles on the pitch were compounded by ugly scenes of violence that erupted during their clash with Menlopark recently, casting a shadow over what was already a deeply disappointing season. The drop into the Plate division represents a significant fall for a school accustomed to competing amongst Noordvaal’s elite.

Plate Division: Klerksdorp Hoërskool’s winless woe seals fate

Klerksdorp Hoërskool will be playing Shield rugby in 2027 after a season that promised little and delivered less. Whilst their U14 side topped their table and marched into the semi-finals with pride intact, the rest of the school’s age groups simply couldn’t match that standard.

Most damning was the 1st XV’s failure to register a single victory throughout the entire competition. The chasm between KHS and Montana unbridgeable, with the points deficit far too substantial to overcome. It’s a bitter pill for the Klerksdorp faithful, watching their youngest stars shine whilst the senior sides stumbled.

Shield Division: Eldoraigne’s horror show ends in swift return to Bowl

If there’s a cautionary tale about the perils of promotion, Eldoraigne have just written it. After climbing into the Shield division in 2025, they’re heading straight back down to the Bowl after an utterly catastrophic campaign.

Their 1st XV endured one of the worst seasons in recent memory, failing to register a victory in any competition. Their solitary point came from a draw against Hudson Park during the KES Easter Festival, a fleeting moment of resistance in an otherwise relentless nightmare.

Lichtenburg, who found themselves locked in the relegation scrap with Eldoraigne, discovered their salvation after the winter break. A resurgence in form saw them pull clear, culminating in a points avalanche against Eldoraigne in their head-to-head showdown that effectively sealed Eldo’s fate.

Bowl Division: Double demotion to division 2

The Bowl division will farewell two schools to Division 2 in 2027, with Die Anker and Hoërskool Hugenote both dropping down the pyramid. For these programmes, the challenge of rebuilding begins immediately.

As the playoff picture takes shape and teams jostle for silverware, these four schools face the harsh reality of starting again a tier below.
