CENTANE – Police in the Eastern Cape are appealing to the public for assistance following the murder of an 89-year-old woman in Centane.
According to Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the incident occurred at Sigangala A/A in Nonyembezi locality on the night of 22 April at around 22:00.
The elderly woman was asleep in her home with her 17-year-old grandson when two unknown men arrived.
One of the suspects, armed with a firearm, allegedly forced the 27-year-old grandson at gunpoint to knock on his grandmother’s door.
When the door was opened, the suspect entered the house under the pretence of looking for money before fatally shooting the woman in the upper body. She died at the scene.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the family.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, especially the two young grandchildren who witnessed this horrific act. An 89-year-old grandmother should be safe in her own home. We will leave no stone unturned until those responsible are behind bars,” he said.
No arrests have been made and the suspects remain at large.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Members of the public can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit tips anonymously via the MySAPS App.
