PAARL โ A horrific accident in dense fog at a notoriously dangerous intersection in Paarl has left five members of a single family injured and resulted in one confirmed fatality.
The collision occurred at the corner of Sonstraal Road and Swawelstert Road at approximately 20:15 on Saturday 18 July 2026, triggering a chaotic rescue operation in near-zero visibility.
The incident unfolded under perilous weather conditions. According to first responders Anthea Carelse and Daan van Leeuwen Boomkamp of Drakenstein Farm Watch (DFW) Fire & Rescue, a non-profit private Emergency First Aid Response (EFAR) group, the crash was initiated by a mechanical breakdown.
One vehicle had broken down and was being towed by another when the tow line suddenly snapped. As the occupants stepped out of their vehicles into the thick fog to reattach the cable, a third vehicle traveling from the opposite direction failed to see the stationary cars in time and slammed directly into them.
Among those struck were two or three young boys standing near the tow line. The driver of one of the vehicles sustained a severely broken leg. In total, five members of one family were injured, alongside the driver of the oncoming vehicle.

Speaking to NovaNews, the DFW crew described a chaotic and terrifying scene as they worked to save lives in the dark.
We could hardly see 10 meters in front of us because of the thick fog,” said van Leeuwen Boomkamp. “Emergency vehicles had to drive incredibly slowly just to reach us. We were stuck on the side of the road for 20 minutes trying to treat five heavily injured patients by ourselves.
Western Cape Police Media Liaison Officer, Constable Ndakhe Gwala, confirmed that the incident was fatal.
“Paarl police opened a case of culpable homicide following an accident that occurred at the corners of Sonstraal and Swawelstert Road on Saturday 18 July 2026 at about 20:15,” Constable Gwala stated.
“According to reports, one of the vehicles was being towed when the rope broke. As they came out of their vehicles to check, a third motor vehicle came from the front and collided with the two vehicles. They all sustained injuries and were transported to a medical facility where one victim succumbed to the injuries.”
This latest tragedy has reignited intense community anger over the infrastructure at the Sonstraal and Swawelstert Road intersection. Local responders warn that the T-junction has become a “functional death trap.”
The area completely lacks streetlights and all the warning road signs at the intersection were destroyed in a separate collision three weeks ago and have still not been replaced. Drivers unfamiliar with the stretch frequently fail to realise the road ends, driving through the junction and crashing into the surrounding vineyards.
According to DFW Fire & Rescue, the intersection sees serious accidents almost every week, logging five major collisions in just the last two months, resulting in three fatalities over the past 30 days.
Police investigations into the exact circumstances of Saturday’s fatal crash are ongoing.
