BOITEKONG – A 52-year-old man has been arrested after police allegedly found dye-stained banknotes at his home during an intelligence-led operation connected to an investigation into ATM bombings in the Bojanala Platinum District.

According to police, the investigation began after receiving intelligence on 9 July 2026 indicating that individuals were depositing dye-stained banknotes into various bank accounts across the district.

Working alongside bank investigators, police traced the deposits to a specific bank account, prompting further investigation.

Deposits traced

On Friday, 17 July 2026, members of the Bojanala Crime Intelligence Unit and the Brits Trio Task Team (TRT) conducted a tactical operation at a residence in Seraleng, near Boitekong.

During a search of the property, officers allegedly discovered dye-stained banknotes. Police said the suspect was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for their possession.

The suspect, a 52-year-old Lesotho national, was arrested and charged with possession of suspected dye-stained banknotes.

Investigators are also exploring possible links between the suspect and a series of ATM bombings in the Bojanala District. Clothing seized from the residence has been sent for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

Further arrests expected

Police said further arrests are expected as investigations continue.

The suspect is due to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 July 2026, on charges relating to the possession of suspected dye-stained banknotes.

Acting North West Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo said the arrest highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing and cooperation between specialised police units and banking investigators.

He praised the officers involved in the operation and said police would continue their efforts to ensure that everyone linked to the investigation is brought before the courts.

The investigation remains ongoing.
