BLOEMFONTEIN – Matric learners from across South Africa who excel in leadership, academics, culture and sport, and who plan to study at the University of the Free State (UFS) next year, have only until Friday 31 July to enter the UFS and Novus Media’s Matriculant of the Year competition.

The top 25 participants stand a chance to win bursaries, cash prizes and gifts worth approximately R500 000. The prizes are sponsored by UFS Student Recruitment Services, the Kovsie Alumni Trust, Forvis Mazars, Absa and Pick n Pay Preller Walk.

Learners may enter themselves or be nominated by their schools. Following the selection process, 25 semifinalists will be chosen, after which 14 finalists will compete in the final round in Bloemfontein from 5 to 7 October.

For three first-year UFS students, the competition was about far more than winning prizes. They say it boosted their confidence, helped them form lasting friendships and made the transition from school to university much easier.

‘You’ve already done the hard work’

Megan Johnson, who is studying medicine this year, says the competition taught her to believe in herself.

“The competition taught me to have confidence in myself and stay true to who I am. After the competition, I felt far more confident during interviews and when answering difficult questions without preparation.”

According to Johnson, the friendships she formed during the final round made her first days on campus much easier.

“I already had people I could connect with. Three of the girls I met there are now my best friends.”

Her advice to this year’s entrants is to enjoy every moment of the experience.

“You’ve already done the hard work to qualify. Now take the opportunity to meet new people and create lasting memories.”

‘Not just another contest, but an opportunity’

Samantha Mynhardt, also a first-year medical student, says the competition helped her recognise her own potential.

“The interviews, in particular, taught me to trust myself, think on my feet and not be afraid to let my voice be heard. I realised I could be proud of who I am.”

She says it was a major advantage to already know people on campus before the academic year started.

“Don’t see the competition as just another contest, but as an opportunity to meet people you’ll be studying alongside over the next few years.”

‘Take the leap and enter’

Michelle Jacobs, who is studying towards a Bachelor of Science specialising in Biological Sciences, says the competition helped her realise that she belonged among other high achievers.

“The experience boosted my self-confidence tremendously and challenged me in ways I would never have pushed myself to do.”

She says the people she met during the competition continue to play an important role in her university life.

“Never doubt yourself. Take the leap and enter. What is meant for you will find its way to you.”
