GQEBERHA – A police officer has died and another has been hospitalised following a tragic accident while the members were on patrol in Motherwell, Gqeberha, prompting shock and sadness from SAPS Management in the Eastern Cape and Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha.

According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, the accident occurred on 19 September at Ngonyama Street, NU 8, Motherwell, while the members were patrolling their policing precinct.

“Both police officers were rushed to hospital for treatment and one of them succumbed to his injuries while the second officer remains under medical care,” she said. “The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation.”

MEC Nqatha has stated that the death of this police officer is not only a loss to his family and colleagues but also to the entire community of Gqeberha.

The MEC further extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured officer a speedy recovery.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased member.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our members in a tragic accident. The death of a colleague is a painful loss to the entire SAPS family,” said Ncata. “Our thoughts are with the bereaved family during this difficult time, and we wish the injured member strength and a speedy recovery.”
