KARIEGA – Five people were killed in a head-on collision between a Toyota Corolla and a VW Polo on the R334 near Kariega on 30 August.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the crash occurred at about 17:00 when the VW Polo was travelling from Motherwell towards Kariega and collided with the Toyota Corolla, which was travelling in the opposite direction towards Motherwell.
The VW Polo was carrying three people, two men and a woman, while two men were travelling in the Toyota Corolla.
“All five occupants of the two vehicles were declared deceased at the scene by emergency services. The deceased include the drivers of both vehicles,” the department said.
The department said the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the cause of the crash, remained under investigation.
“Various authorities are expected to assist with the investigation,” the department said.
The department said a case of culpable homicide would be opened at the Kariega SAPS for further investigation.
Eastern Cape Department of Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha expressed his condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in what he described as a tragic crash.
