JOIN the runners, walkers and joggers on Saturday, November 16, for the Global Diabetes 5km Walk/Run, a community event to spotlight the impact of diabetes in the community and to promote better health awareness.
The walk/run will start at 10:00 from Splash Waterworld at Kings Beach. Online registration is open at www.zsports.co.za/globalwalk.
With more than 4.5 million South Africans currently diagnosed with diabetes and countless more potentially undiagnosed, the condition has become a growing health crisis.
Diabetes is a leading cause of death in the country, contributing significantly to cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, and vision loss. Recent studies show that one in four South Africans is at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, making early awareness and lifestyle changes crucial.
In recognition that diabetes affects not only people but also animals, the event is pet-friendly, welcoming leashed pets to join in. This aspect helps highlight that diabetes management and lifestyle adjustments are important across the community.
Free testing will take place on a first-come basis from 08:00 on race morning at the Splash Waterworld complex at Kings Beach car park. Proceeds from the entry fees go to the Gqeberha branch of Diabetes South Africa.
