Suspect in Marolien Schmidt murder abandons bail


Simxolele Zitshu who is the suspect in the brutal murder of Gqeberha physiotherapist, Marolien Schmidt, told the court he would like to abandon his bail application when he made his fourth appearance at the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court today, Tuesday, 22 August.

His case has been remanded to Thursday, 24 August for a consultation with senior council. He is being represented by Legal Aid.

During previous court appearances Zitshu said he wanted a speedy trial and wants to tell the truth. He has previous convictions for murder and robbery. According to the charge sheet the charges in connectin with Schmidt’s death are murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, housebreaking with the intent to steal and theft.

Schmidt, 40, was found in a pool of blood at her Gqeberha home after being stabbed several times, and ultimately died upon arrival at hospital.

A “pink” memorial service was held for Schmidt on Friday, August 18.

Zitshu remains in police custody.
