GQEBERHA – A 49-year-old KwaZakhele SAPS officer allegedly shot his wife before shooting himself at their home in Bumbane Street, NU 4, at about 07:00 on Monday, 26 October.

Police have opened an inquest docket and an attempted murder case for investigation

According to the Provincial SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, upon arrival, police members were informed that the incident had occurred at the home of a police official.

“A police official (49) stationed at KwaZakhele SAPS allegedly shot his wife before shooting himself,” she said.

Gantana added that the wife survived the attack and was taken to hospital for treatment.

“She sustained three gunshot wounds,” she said. “Two children were in the house at the time of the incident but were not injured.”

Gantana confirmed that the firearm used in the incident was the member’s service pistol.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” she said. “No further information can be released at this stage.”

The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, condemned the incident.

“This incident is deeply distressing to us as SAPS, and our thoughts are with the injured wife as she recovers, with the two children who were in the house, and with the family,” he said.

“We recognise the trauma such incidents cause, and management will ensure that counselling and support are made available to those affected,” he said.

Ncata appealed personally to SAPS members and their families, “If you are experiencing emotional distress, domestic conflict or any situation that feels beyond your control, please reach out for help through SAPS wellness services, a trusted colleague or a professional counsellor.”

“Seeking help is a sign of strength, and support is available,” he concluded.
