RECIPE | Jinny Els’ delicious koeksisters

Jinny Els’ delicious koeksisters

Ingredients

  • 4 heaped cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 heaped tsp baking powder
  • 4 heaped tsp butter
  • 2 eggs
  • Approximately 500 ml water

Syrup

  • 12 cups of sugar
  • 1 ½ even tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tbsp golden syrup
  • 6 cups water
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence

Preparation

Step 1:Mix all the ingredients for the syrup and cook through. Leave in the fridge overnight.

Step 2: Mix the flour and salt.

Step 3: Rub butter into the flour until it forms crumbs and then add the baking powder.

Step 4: Add the water and mix until it looks like scone dough.

Step 5: Place in a bowl and let it stand for ± 2 – 3 hours, covered with a damp cloth.

Step 6: Roll the dough out until fairly thin.

Step 7: Form the koeksisters and cover with a damp cloth while frying.

Step 8: Fry in deep oil until golden brown.9. After frying, immediately dip in the cold syrup for a few seconds. Remove koeksisters and put them on a drying rack to get rid of the excess syrup.
