GQEBERHA – Hundreds of learners from across the Eastern and Western Cape showcased discipline, teamwork and precision at the 11th Annual Eastern Cape Schools Marching Drill Competition in Gqeberha on Saturday.
The competition took place at the Fairview Sports Centre on 8 August, bringing together schools to demonstrate their skills in marching, drill and teamwork.
South African Police Service (SAPS) Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Major General Thandiswa Kupiso delivered the keynote address, encouraging learners to see the competition as more than a display of marching skills.
Kupiso said the event was about developing good behaviour, self-discipline, ethical conduct, concentration and perseverance.
“This competition is value-driven and is more than mere marching in formation. It is about being consistent in good behaviour, self-discipline, and ethical skills,” she said.
She praised the learners for their commitment, neatness, time management and ability to follow commands, saying that taking part in the competition demonstrated qualities that could benefit them beyond the parade ground.
Kupiso urged the participants to learn from one another, respect each other’s strengths and demonstrate humility in competition.
“I encourage you not to just compete against each other, but also learn from each other. Celebrate each strength, respect each other, and win with humility. As you drill, do it with precision. As you compete, compete with integrity,” she said.
She also encouraged learners to take the lessons of discipline and teamwork back to their schools and communities.
“The lesson of teamwork is that we are stronger when we work together. March and drill today not just with your feet, but with purpose, unity, and pride,” Kupiso said.
The high-spirited competition concluded with an awards ceremony, with the event aimed at equipping learners with life skills while promoting structured discipline.
The annual competition forms part of a long-standing partnership between SAPS and the GoBig Community Development and Training Centre, focusing on youth empowerment and social crime prevention through structured discipline.
Learners were joined by proud parents, coaches and teachers, as well as representatives from various law enforcement agencies.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were former Sarah Baartman District Commissioner retired Major General Zolani Xawuka, Gelvandale SAPS station commander Brigadier Abdoerahgmaan Humphries, Sarah Baartman District Community Police Board chairperson Mieta Williams-Jan and representatives of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Police Department.
