GQEBERHA – The last time there were elections, I did not vote because I was unemployed and struggled to see how things could change.

I did not see a need to vote because the unemployment rate was high and I was part of that statistic. I believed voting was a waste of time because political parties tended to make promises to win votes but ultimately failed to fulfil them.

This year, however, I decided to vote, not because I suddenly believe that things will change overnight. Nor does it mean that I support everything political parties say.

I believe that not voting allows someone else to have a say in my future. If I believe that the current leading political party is not making a difference, I should vote for the political party that I trust to bring about change.

For us young people, there are many issues that matter. Unemployment is one of them. The lack of opportunities for graduates is another issue. I understand why many young people say, “Nothing will change.” Having experienced unemployment, I know how frustrating and exhausting it can be, especially when you have qualifications. I believe that politicians do not understand what young people are going through.

I have started to see voting differently. If young people don’t vote because they are disappointed, decisions will still be made without their input. Voting gives them an opportunity to have a say in decisions that will determine their future.

This year, I will look at what political parties say about jobs and unemployment. What opportunities will they offer for young people? Another important matter is service delivery.

How will communities, especially here in the Eastern Cape, be helped to access reliable electricity, water and other basic services?
