THE ReTrade Project, an organisation committed to promoting environmental sustainability and community empowerment through recycling, was thrilled to announce its Open Day celebration in honour of Mandela Day 2023.

The ReTrade Project invited people from all walks of life to participate in a day filled with activities aimed at making a positive impact on the environment and community.

Taking place on Tuesday, July 18, at 22 Newcomb Avenue, Walmer Heights, the ReTrade Project’s Mandela Day Open Day event served as a platform for individuals, businesses, churches and schools to come together and contribute to a greener and more equitable future.

Attendees had the opportunity to view and drop off their recycling materials at the recycling depot in Walmer Heights.

The ReTrade Project believes that recycling is a crucial aspect of environmental preservation, and aims at promoting this message through hands-on involvement.

For more ways to get involved, The ReTrade Project also invites community members and businesses to collect 67 tins, symbolising the 67 years Nelson Mandela dedicated to public service and fighting for social justice.

Furthermore, businesses and schools can also run food drives to collect non-perishable items for donation.

Another way to contribute to The ReTrade Project is to donate gently-used clothing and blankets. These donations will be redistributed to individuals in need.

“Spread the word and inform those in need about the services provided. Is someone knocking on your door? Is someone asking for your help? Send them our way to become a part of our trading programme, where waste pickers can exchange recyclable waste for daily essentials. By sharing information, individuals can directly impact the lives of others, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity within the community,” said Maria Grewar, the director at The ReTrade Project.

“Mandela Day is a time to reflect on the values of compassion, equality, and environmental stewardship. We are excited to offer a platform for individuals and corporations to get involved practically, and make a real difference in their communities.

“Together, we can honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela and work towards a brighter, more sustainable future,” said Grewar, speaking about the event.
