NELSON MANDELA BAY – Residents across parts of Nelson Mandela Bay are facing both water supply disruptions and a power outage, with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality urging affected communities to remain patient while municipal teams work to restore services.
According to the municipality, the water supply system remains under strain despite water continuing to be pumped into reservoirs.
Reservoir storage levels remain critically low, with Chelsea Reservoir at 8%, Kwanobuhle Reservoir 2 at 6%, Gelvandale Reservoir at 0%, Airport Reservoir at 2%, Emerald Reservoir at 3%, Lovemore Heights Reservoir at 0% and Greenbushes Reservoir at 10%.
“The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality urges residents to use water sparingly while the water supply system remains under strain,” the municipality said.
Although water is being pumped into the reservoirs, the municipality said the low storage levels are causing intermittent water supply, low water pressure or temporary outages in several areas.
Areas supplied by the Chelsea Reservoir, particularly the higher-lying areas, include Baywest, Rowallan Park, Sherwood, parts of Lorraine, Hunters Retreat, Kabega Park, Morningside, Malabar, Barcelona, Parsonsvlei, Parsons Ridge and parts of Schauderville.
In the Gelvandale Reservoir zone, parts of Helenvale and Lower Gelvandale may be affected.
The Emerald Reservoir zone includes Walmer Heights, Greenshields Park, Walmer from 7th Avenue to 14th Avenue, Walmer Location, Newton Park and the high-lying areas of Central.
Residents in Overbaakens, Charlo, Fairview, Broadwood, Miramar, Mount Pleasant, Providentia, Pari Park, Salisbury Park, Lovemore Heights, Sardinia Bay and the Old Seaview Road/Deer Park area, which are supplied by the Lovemore Heights Reservoir, may also experience disruptions.
The Greenbushes Reservoir zone includes Rowallan Park, Bridgemead and Greenbushes.
“Municipal teams continue to monitor the system and work to restore reservoir levels,” the municipality said.
“Every effort to reduce water consumption will assist in stabilising the system.”
Meanwhile, the municipality’s Electricity and Energy Directorate is investigating a power outage affecting parts of Kabega, Parsons Vlei, Westering and surrounding areas.
The municipality said the outage occurred following the tripping of the Hunters Close 11kV circuit breaker at the Rowallan Park Substation.
Affected areas include Burchell Drive, parts of Kabega, Pick n Pay, Checkers Metlife, Parsons Vlei, Westering and surrounding areas.
“Municipal technical teams have been dispatched and are currently investigating the cause of the outage. Every effort is being made to identify the fault and restore electricity supply as quickly and safely as possible,” the municipality said.
“Further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.”
