THOUSANDS of poverty-stricken people in Port Elizabeth have been pushed further into a state of despair by the recent nationwide Covid-19 lockdown.

Since the start of the lockdown period, local relief organisation, Love Story NPO, has been inundated with calls and appeals from people in disadvantaged communities who are battling to feed themselves and their families.

With donations having ceased due to the limitations of lockdown, Love Story was unable to assist. However, co-founder Elaine Watson recently received a call from Tonia van Jaarsveld from CHEP, saying that she had come across an incredible product that can be used to carry on running Love Story’s feeding schemes and reach the most vulnerable during this time.

“It was a protein mix that is nutritious, affordable and easy to transport, store, deliver and even easier to make. CHEP donated a large sum of money to Love Story to purchase the first few hundred kilograms,” Watson said.

“As well as receiving calls from people in need, Love Story was receiving as many calls from generous locals wanting to assist and make a difference. Love Story unfortunately could not offer volunteering opportunities, but this sparked an idea to begin a Facebook campaign whereby the public can donate funds toward a Covid-19 Lockdown Fund.”

Within the first week, Love Story managed to distribute about 20 000 meals to the destitute.

“The public came on board in the most generous way and support started streaming in from all over,” Watson said. “On day eight CHEP donated another huge sum of money which skyrocketed the distribution of meals to 64 000. By day 12, the meals were at 96 021.

“This is an incredible feat and we have the public of PE to thank and most importantly, CHEP, who do so much for the destitute of this city,” Watson added.

“We have hope being birthed within the communities as people rally together and build family and togetherness.”

They have appealed to the public to get involved by visiting the Love Story website at www.lovestory.org.za/covid-19-relief/.
