Three Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police members, who were officially welcomed into the workforce this week, made an arrest on Friday, July 14, in Central following the attempted murder and robbery of an Atlas security officer.

According to Metro Police Deputy Commissioner, Advocate Andrew Moses, the three officers were conducting their routine patrol work around 14:00 when they received a report that two men were on the run from a robbery scene towards flats in Gordon Terrace.

The officers responded to the information and found the two men fitting the description.

“While approaching the men, the suspects ran away, and the officers gave chase and managed to catch one of the suspects. Upon investigation, the suspect admitted they had been involved in a crime and showed the members where the firearm of the Atlas security officer was hidden.

“The firearm was recovered in a block of flats in Central, hidden under a mattress.

“It was upon their way to the Humewood Police Station that the officers learnt of the details of the robbery and attempted murder of the Atlas security officer, who had been rushed to the hospital already.

“While the officers were taking the suspect to Humewood SAPS, they were stopped by Atlas Security reporting the shooting that one of their members was shot by the men fitting the description that the officers had and that they robbed him of his firearm,” added Moses.

Moses further said, “They then informed the Atlas members that they had arrested one of the suspects and managed to recover the firearm too.

“The 26-year-old suspect was detained at the Humewood Police Station and is expected to appear in court on Monday, July 17.”

This brave act from our members prevented more loss of life because of the fact that an illegal firearm and ammunition is off the streets. As the Metro Police Department, we are commending the courage, bravery and vigilance of our members.
