LIBODE – A 28-year-old Libode man in the Eastern Cape has been arrested for the alleged murder of his 29-year-old girlfriend, after reportedly confessing to killing her.

The incident is believed to have occurred between Friday, 17 April, and Saturday, 18 April.

Police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo said officers were alerted to the crime in the early hours of Saturday morning, at around 01:00.

“It is alleged that the suspect murdered his girlfriend at an unknown location and buried her in a shallow grave in a secluded area,” said Matyolo.

The woman was later reported missing, prompting concerned relatives to contact the suspect, who was the last person seen with her.

According to police, the suspect then allegedly exhumed the body and transported it to the family using a wheelbarrow, after which authorities were notified.

“A lawful confession has been obtained, in which the suspect admitted to the murder and subsequent burial,” Matyolo confirmed.

A pointing-out is expected to take place today (Monday, 20 April) ahead of the suspect’s appearance in the Libode Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder.

OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana urged communities to report missing persons without delay.

“Immediate reporting of missing persons can save many innocent lives,” he said.
