LIBODE – A kidnapping victim (38) was rescued, and one suspect was arrested during a routine crime-prevention operation conducted by Libode Crime Prevention members yesterday evening, 3 August.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, at approximately 21:45, police officers stopped a vehicle near the Msintsini locality.

“As the police approached, several male occupants fled the scene in different directions,” he said. “The driver, a 35-year-old man, was swiftly apprehended.”

Matyolo added that upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered an adult male victim whose hands were tied and who showed signs of assault.

“He was immediately rescued and transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.”

He added that preliminary investigations reveal that the victim had recently received a Road Accident Fund (RAF) payout.

“He was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash, and the suspects were reportedly en route to withdraw more funds when they were intercepted,” Matyolo said.

He added that the Isuzu Double Cab bakkie used in the commission of the crime has been confiscated for further investigation.

“A manhunt is currently under way for the remaining suspects who evaded arrest.”

Matyolo confirmed that the arrested individual is expected to appear in the Libode Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of kidnapping and robbery.

“Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues,” he said.

The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, reiterated a strong warning to the public: “Do not disclose information about any monetary payouts you may have received. Criminals are always on the lookout for unsuspecting beneficiaries and will not hesitate to target them.”
