TWO local Rover Motocross riders, 11-year-old Liam Botha and 12-year-old Kyle Townsend, have been selected by Motorsport South Africa to partake in the Motocross Junior World Championship in Italy on July 13 and 14.

Both Botha and Townsend are Grey Junior School learners in Grades 5 and 6 respectively. The riders were carefully chosen based on their current ranking on the MX National circuit.

The race will take place at the MX National in Gauteng on July 6 after which the boys will fly out to Italy on July 9 to attend the prestigious race.

The Junior World Championship consists of the 65cc, 85cc and 125cc classes. Liam will be racing in the 65cc class and Kyle in the 85cc class.

There will be 120 riders per class of which only 40 will qualify to race on Sunday, July 14.

MX Chairman and Townsend’s father, Neville Townsend, said that he is truly honoured to have been invited to the Junior world event and that the team is looking forward to giving their best at the race.

Botha’s father, Chris Botha, echoed his enthusiasm, adding that it is an incredible honour to have been chosen to represent the country at a world event.
