AS the holidays fast approach, Bridgestone South Africa is sharing some essential tips to help you and your loved ones reach your destination safely and soundly.

You’ve probably heard them all before, but it’s well worth revisiting them one more time before you go.

  • Check your tyres and make sure tread depth is a minimum of 3mm – with even all-round wear, and that there are no signs of cracking or other damage.
  • A worn drive-belt could mean serious damage to the engine or its system. Check engine/motor oil, brake fluid, and coolant for leaks and top up if low.
  • Also check transmission, power steering and windscreen wiper fluid. Check taillights and headlights; it is vital they are working.
  • When it comes to brakes, pads are typically the first to wear, so if nothing else, check and ensure a minimum of 5mm thickness. Also check the handbrake.
  • Windscreen wiper blades become worn and cracked, replace them if need be.
  • While driving, stop and take regular breaks every two hours or 200km.
  • Check back and side mirrors diligently and often.
  • Watch the speed limit, not the clock.
  • Keep headlights on during the day. Keep your hands off that phone!
  • Be alert, observe your surroundings, and think three steps ahead by anticipating the actions of the drivers around you.
  • Choose travel times carefully. The more traffic, the less safe, so find out when the peak times are expected to be on your route and avoid them.
  • You have a duty of care to your passengers. This includes the roadworthiness of your vehicle, your driving style and manners, and your sobriety. Your responsibility includes ensuring that all your passengers are buckled up and that luggage is safely and securely stowed.
  • For children under 1.4m in height, the appropriate car seat must be used to ensure their safety and comfort.
