The Boardwalk has given six interns hope of a better future, after they inked permanent employment contracts at the end of their six-month experience contracts.
Thanks to the Boardwalk, the six do not form part of the 46,5 percent of the country’s youth who were unemployed in the first quarter of 2023, according to Statistics South Africa.
The graduates, who hail from the Department of Labour’s “Yes for Youth” programme, have been hired in the Marketing, Gaming Technical and Maintenance departments.
All six hold NQF Level 6 qualifications from PE College, in the fields of marketing and electrical engineering.
Yolisa Malusi will assist with public relations and promotions, handling planning and implementations for activations and promotions at the casino.
“Being made permanent gives me stability and independence,” said the 25-year-old.
Yolisa Malusi said,
Lubabalo Mbophane works as a handyman in the maintenance department, responsible for repairs and maintenance tasks around the hotel and casino, including plumbing.
The remaining four, working in the slots technical department, are responsible for frontline customer service, servicing machine components to ensure that the slot machines are running in compliance with gaming regulations.
“I was so excited by moving from an internship to a permanent role. It told me that the Boardwalk has faith in me,” said Mbophane. “My family was so excited about me getting a job in a company where I can upgrade my knowledge and skills.”
Mbophane said that he enjoyed engaging with staff and guests to understand and solve problems.
Msawenkosi Ntathamba, Siphesihle Nombombo, Sibulele Sopazi and Sivenathi Sontsi have been appointed as Gaming Technical and Floor Assistants.
“June is Youth Month in South Africa and we are pleased to be able to open doors for these young graduates and give them hope of a better future,” said Tati Tsunke, Boardwalk hotel and casino general manager.
