Extremely hot conditions are expected today and tomorrow over the western half of the Eastern Cape, west of and including Adelaide, Fort Beaufort and Cradock.

Temperatures could reach 40°C in places, warns Garth Sampson from the South African Weather Service.

“The Bay can expect temperatures in the low 30’s, while Uitenhage could reach the high 30’s,” Sampson said.

He advised people to not leave pets or children in cars, especially in hot conditions.

“The temperature in a car can rise to more than 10°C higher than the outside temperature in just 10 minutes and 20°C in 30 minutes.”

Take these precautions curing extreme hot weather
  • Stay indoors in a cool room near a fan if possible
  • The old and infirm must take extra care
  • Listen to the radio or TV for warnings.
  • Cease strenuous outdoor activity if advised
  • Avoid playing sport
  • Dress in light weight clothes
  • Drink plenty of liquids (not alcohol)
