Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, confirmed today, December 9, that 47 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol over the past weekend in the Eastern Cape.

According to Binqose, the arrests align with Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha’s directives for law enforcement officers to deal sternly with incidents of drunk driving.

He explained that these arrests aim to clear the roads of drunk drivers, minimise the risk of road crashes, and save lives, including those of the offenders themselves.

“The majority of the arrests were made on Saturday, December 7, during sting operations in each of the province’s six districts,” he further explained.
