“KEEP going strong for Lyle!”

It was likely these words, printed on his t-shirt that kept Ian Moore going when he tackled the mountain bike event of The Herald Cycle Tour in Addo recently.

Ian is using cycling to raise funds for Lyle Combrinck, a resident of Cheshire Home Summerstrand.

Lyle, born on March 31, 1972, was only three years old when he was diagnosed with Encephalitis. After a long stay in hospital, he had lost all of his senses, except his hearing.

“My mother dedicated her life to teaching me to talk, sit and walk again. Although I learnt how to walk and talk quite well, my fine motor co-ordination was destroyed by this illness. Still, my condition would eventually deteriorate to the point where I now need full-time care,” Combrinck said on the BackaBuddy site, where the funds are being raised.

Lyle lost his mother to cancer in February 2021 and his father (88) is unable to care for him.

While he now has the use of an electric wheelchair, soon he will need a wheelchair with head and body support, as well as ongoing physiotherapy.

“My wish is to create awareness of the fullness of life that Lyle lives as a special needs person at Cheshire Home Summerstrand, where he radiates happiness, joy, laughter and contentment in any situation he finds himself in – and to be able to raise enough funding to provide the necessary care with added medical needs, at Cheshire Home Summerstrand,” said Moore.

“Lyle will remain a resident of Cheshire Home Summerstrand for the rest of his life, and will need a new wheelchair soon to suit his needs, and also it is vital that he starts with ongoing physio.”

Their fundraising target is R100 000. For more information, visit www.backabuddy.co.za/keep-going-strong-lyle.
