Police in Peddie are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a woman died in an accident and her husband, well-known Gqeberha-based Doctor Iain Butler and son were transported to a hospital in Gqeberha on May 20.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that at about 10:30, the driver of a silver Audi Q3 vehicle was driving towards Gqeberha on the N2 near Peddie when a truck travelling in the opposite direction allegedly lost control while driving down the Keiskamma River cutting, hitting the Audi Q3.

“The woman who was the front seated passenger died on impact while the driver and boy were rushed to a nearby hospital and then airlifted to Gqeberha,” said Naidu.

She further said the truck driver and his passenger did not sustain any injuries.

Naidu said the truck, a horse and trailer was carrying cement.

She said police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

A statement by hospital manager of Life St George’s, John Fidler, confirmed that a doctor from their hospital was involved in a vehicle accident.

He said Iain was transported by ambulance to St George’s and his son, Joshua was flown by Helivac to the hospital as well.

“It is devastating to share that Dr Butler’s wife succumbed to her injuries,” said John.

He further said that Iain’s daughter was not in the car with the family.

“Our thoughts are with the family, colleagues and all the staff at this time,” said John.

Naidu said the name of the deceased is withheld until a formal identification is done.
