GQEBERHA – Thulani Kondile (42), a serial rapist, has been sentenced to four life terms of imprisonment by the Gqeberha Regional Court on 31 March, bringing to an end a case that dates back to 2019. Kondile was convicted on multiple counts of rape and kidnapping.

He was sentenced to an additional five years’ imprisonment for kidnapping.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said the case was opened in August 2019 after a 19-year-old victim boarded Kondile’s taxi from a shopping mall in KwaDwesi.

She had been on her way to buy electricity.

Janse van Rensburg said that after Kondile dropped off the other passengers, he deviated from the route and drove to bushes near St George’s Beach, where he repeatedly raped the victim.

Following investigations, Kondile was positively identified and traced in Peddie in March 2021 by Sergeant Kelibone Mokhatla of the Motherwell Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

“Bail was successfully opposed, and the accused remained in custody until the finalisation of the case. Further investigations also linked the accused to other rape cases,” she noted.

Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, commended the investigating officer, Sergeant Kelibone Mokhatla, for her persistence, professionalism and dedication in ensuring justice for the victim. He added that her meticulous investigation and unwavering resolve played a critical role in securing the conviction and removing a dangerous offender from society.
