After the tragic death of his mother one month ago, Dexter Kannemeyer of Gqeberha – who followed in his mom’s career footsteps to become a real estate agent – hopes to make her proud with the six awards he won recently at the Keller Williams (KW) Explore PE Annual Awards.
While working together at KW Realty, Kannemeyer said that he had a good personal and working relationship with his mother, Cheryl-Ann.
He further said that they always knew when to end a conversation on a good note, after having a heated debate at work.
Since his mother, who had many years of experience as a real estate agent, was the reason he joined the industry almost two years ago, Kannemeyer said that she was very supportive of his career and that she was always willing to give advice.
After two short years working side-by-side, Cheryl-Ann was brutally murdered in a car on December 27, 2023, in the yard of the Gelvandale home she shared with her estranged husband, Colin, better known as “Junior”.
Junior has since been arrested for her murder, and abandoned his bid for bail during his first appearance in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court earlier this month.
His next appearance will be on February 20.
Since returning to work, Kannemeyer said that when he speaks to his colleagues they constantly remind him of the remarkable woman his mother was, and how much they miss her.
“It has been tough. I don’t know when things will get better, but I will forever strive to do my best and make her proud,” said Kannemeyer.
He further said that his late mother was not only missed at work, but that she was sorely missed at home as well, especially by his children who miss their nan so much.
Kannemeyer said that since his mother’s passing, he has been “taking it one day at a time”.
After celebrating many milestones and achievements with his mother by his side, he recently received six awards at the KW Explore PE annual awards, which he describes as a bittersweet moment since his mother was meant to attend the awards ceremony as well.
Kannemeyer also accepted the capper award on behalf of his mother. It is an award given to estate agents who earn 92 percent commission and attained R9 million in sales.
With fewer than two years of experience as a real estate agent, his hard work and dedication to the industry resulted in him receiving first place for registered units, and third place for both registered GCI and registered sales volume.
In addition to this, Kannemeyer was named rookie of the year, and he received the prestigious capper award.
He also received the millionaires’ club recognition award.
During his first year as a real estate agent, Kannemeyer won the local newcomer award, and he was capped.
He has also been selected to attend the Keller Williams South Africa Family Reunion Conference and Awards in Pretoria on February 1, where he has been shortlisted for the Rookie of the Year Award, and the Most Units Sold by an Individual Agent Award.
At least 2 000 real estate agents will be in attendance.
Thinking about the accomplishments he has achieved since joining the real estate industry, Kannemeyer said that his mother was proud of him.
“I’m grateful to have a recording of her saying how very proud she is of me,” said Kannemeyer.
