GQEBERHA – Young volunteers from ASEZ WAO took part in a tree-planting initiative in Bethelsdorp, Nelson Mandela Bay, on Sunday as part of the organisationโs global โMotherโs Forestโ Project aimed at addressing climate change.
The environmental campaign saw around 25 volunteers plant 75 saplings during a two-hour activity focused on expanding green spaces and promoting environmental sustainability.
The โMotherโs Forestโ Project, led by ASEZ WAO โ the young adult worker volunteer group of the World Mission Society Church of God โ encourages communities worldwide to respond to climate change through tree planting and the removal of invasive species.
According to ASEZ WAO, the initiative is inspired by โa motherโs heartโ that seeks to protect the Earth and future generations.
โProtecting the environment begins with small actions, such as planting a single tree,โ an ASEZ WAO representative said.

โYoung people, who will lead future generations, have taken part in tree planting to help build a sustainable world. We will continue to collaborate with local communities so that residents can enjoy a cleaner and more pleasant environment.โ
Volunteers spent the morning digging, planting saplings, covering them with soil and watering the trees.
The initiative received support from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and Nelson Mandela University, which provided saplings and encouraged the volunteers.
Ward 35 councillor Noeleen Moodley praised the project, saying the trees would benefit residents, particularly during summer when additional shade is needed in public spaces.
Municipal horticulturist Msimelelo Ngcaku also welcomed the initiative and expressed interest in future collaboration with the organisation.
Volunteer Lubabalo Zozi said he was grateful for the opportunity to โpractice Motherโs love through planting trees that will be beneficial to many residents and protect the environment.โ
Another volunteer, Okuhle Mpahlwa, described the experience as โtouching lives, one tree at a timeโ and said she was proud to contribute towards spreading hope during the climate crisis.
ASEZ WAO has previously conducted environmental campaigns and clean-up projects in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Tshwane, including tree-planting drives and support initiatives for healthcare workers and police officers.
