Tavern owner shot dead during armed robbery in St Albans


GQEBERHA – Police are investigating a case of business robbery, murder and theft of a motor vehicle following a violent incident at a tavern in St Albans.

According to police, four armed suspects stormed a local tavern situated along Old Cape Road at approximately 20:30 on Monday, 4 May.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said officers were called to the scene shortly after the incident.

“SAPS members responded to a complaint of a business robbery at a local tavern situated on Old Cape Road, St Albans. Upon arrival at the scene, members were informed that four armed suspects had entered the premises and robbed the establishment,” she said.

During the robbery, the 43-year-old owner of the tavern was shot multiple times.

“The victim was found lying on the floor in the kitchen area with multiple gunshot wounds to her upper chest and throat. She was declared deceased at the scene,” Janse van Rensburg confirmed.

The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash, two flat-screen televisions, cellphones, a Dixon mixer, bedding and the victim’s silver Chevrolet Optra.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects and are appealing to the public for assistance.
