GQEBERHA – Shrieks of joy filled Van Der Kemp Primary School on Thursday, 19 March, as young learners from Grade R to 3 took part in the second edition of the Victory Games.

The faith-based initiative brought children together for a day of energetic games, teamwork and scripture-inspired fun.

“The Victory Games celebrate culture, creativity and collaboration, all grounded in God’s word while promoting physical activity,” said Gi-Anthea Davis of the Benedicta Foundation, the organisation behind the initiative.

The programme features interactive station-based games designed to help children experience biblical lessons in a hands-on way.

“For instance, in the Noah’s Ark activity, kids fill a bucket with water using a sponge to represent their assigned animal and then imitate that animal to board the ark,” Davis explained.

Another activity, inspired by 1 Corinthians 9:24, is called “Run the race of faith,” where children run in sacks with a partner, fostering unity while having fun.

The first Victory Games initiative took place last year in May last year, also at Van Der Kemp Primary School, with 250 learners participating.

“Our inaugural event saw 250 learners participate, and we partnered with SPAR and Khulasande Sports Development,” Davis shared.

The foundation plans to continue the initiative in future events, hosting them monthly at various beneficiary schools across the Northern Areas.

In addition to the games, learners received sandwiches, fruit, water and juice during breaks, as well as certificates of participation.

“We provide refreshments and certificates as a warm farewell for all students,” Davis said.

The Victory Games are part of the broader mission of the Benedicta Foundation, founded in 2021 by Thaspen Huhner and officially registered in 2024 as both a Non-Profit Company (NPC) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO).

The foundation runs workshops addressing trauma awareness, career guidance, food security, skills development and social issues such as teenage pregnancy.

“Our mission is rooted in the belief that every disadvantaged community deserves the chance to be transformed through the renewal of their minds,” Davis explained.

“Through the Victory Games, we aim to create platforms where children can grow spiritually, socially and physically, while also bringing communities together.”

The foundation encourages businesses, organisations and community members to support the initiative.

“Organisations and businesses can sponsor transport or donate water, juices or sandwiches. Volunteers are welcome to help with planning, distributing flyers and assisting on the day,” Davis commented.

“Community members can also support by getting involved in their children’s schools and backing initiatives like this in their areas,” she added.
