GQEBERHA – Merryvale Special School hosted its annual Toffee Athletics on 18 and 19 March, bringing together learners, staff and supporters for two days of energy, teamwork and achievement.
Learners from the Junior, Practical, Neural and ASD phases participated enthusiastically, showcasing both their competitive spirit and enjoyment throughout the programme.
The event highlighted the diverse talents and abilities of all participants in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Perseverance, sportsmanship and unity were at the heart of the event, with staff working diligently to ensure that every learner could take part in a safe and encouraging atmosphere.
The event follows closely on the heels of the school’s recent 70th celebration.
Last month, Merryvale School for Specialised Education marked its 70th anniversary, celebrating seven decades of dedicated service to learners with special educational needs.
The school currently serves 404 learners and continues to expand its offerings to meet growing community needs.

Principal Gerda Saayman, who has led the school for three years and has been part of the institution for nearly two decades, emphasised that learners remain at the heart of everything the staff do.
“These children keep you humble and grateful, and they teach us so much more than we can teach them,” she said.
“As staff, we work together to ensure each child reaches their full potential, developing holistically.”
Merryvale Special School continues to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive education by creating opportunities for every learner to succeed.
The success of this year’s Toffee Athletics once again reflects the school’s dedication to recognising and celebrating each learner’s unique abilities.
