BETHELSDORP – A 31-year-old man has been sentenced in the Gqeberha High Court to life imprisonment on multiple offences, including three counts of murder, committed in 2024 in Kleinskool, Bethelsdorp.

The Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Major General Vuyisile Ncata welcomed the successful conviction and sentencing of Anele Sombulashe.

On 12 January 2024 at approximately 11:45, members of Bethelsdorp Visible Policing were on patrol in Kleinskool when they heard multiple gunshots. They responded immediately and, upon arrival in Main Road, were directed by community members to two victims who had been shot.

A third victim was later discovered inside a residence in Nevana Street.

The deceased were identified as Rory Williams (19), Adolfy Bemarsky (59) and Goodman Borends, all of whom sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

Members of the Anti-Gang Unit, who were also operational in the area, were pointed to an alleged suspect fleeing towards Ferreira Grounds. As police approached, the suspect opened fire on members. SAPS members pursued the suspect and successfully effected an arrest.

Three 9mm firearms were recovered. No police members were injured during the incident.

The accused, who is affiliated with the Guptas Gang, was convicted and sentenced as follows:

  • Murder (three counts): Life imprisonment on each count
  • Attempted murder: Not guilty
  • Unlawful possession of semi-automatic firearms (three counts): 15 years’ imprisonment
  • Unlawful possession of ammunition (three counts): 5 years’ imprisonment
  • Theft: 3 years’ imprisonment
  • Attempted murder on SAPS members (three counts): 10 years’ imprisonment

The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

In a statement, SAPS commended the Anti-Gang Unit members for their dedication and valuable testimony during the trial.

“Appreciation is also extended to the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Ferreira, and his team, as well as the National Prosecuting Authority, led by Advocate Landman, for securing the conviction and sentence,” the statement read.
