A fire that broke out this morning in the veld behind a Pick ‘n Pay warehouse at around 07:30 was swiftly brought under control with no injuries reported.
Ward 6 councillor Gert Engelbrecht, who was one of the first on the scene, said he noted plumes of smoke coming from the direction of Moffett Retail Park.
“I saw the smoke at around 07:40 and immediately headed over there,” he explained. “At first glance, it looked like the shopping centre building itself might be on fire, but thankfully that wasn’t the case.”

The fire had actually started in the open veld between the Moffett Retail Park and one of Pick ‘n Pay’s warehouses. As the flames spread, several shopping trolleys caught alight.
“The fire brigade arrived at about 08:00 and had everything under control very quickly.”
The emergency services’ rapid response meant the blaze was extinguished before it could spread to any buildings or cause serious damage.
While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, Engelbrecht praised the swift action that prevented what could have been a much more serious incident.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
