The Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) in Gqeberha are concerned over the trend of theft of motor vehicles targeting vehicles of similar make, particularly in areas such as gyms, schools, and residential yards.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscialla Naidu said in the past week May 8 to 13, at least six vehicles have been reported stolen under circumstances where drivers were not present in the vehicle. In only one incident was the driver hijacked, in Kwazakele
Naidu said while two of these vehicles have since been recovered, it is evident that the perpetrators are utilising sophisticated methods, including the use of ignition devices with computers, to bypass security systems and steal these vehicles.
“Two of the recovered vehicles were tracked to Zwide as they were fitted with a tracking device.
“Parts of these vehicles were already being dismantled,” Naidu reported.
Police believe that the suspects were looking for the tracker.
“Although older vehicles, such as bakkies, the Mazda 323, Toyota Conquest, and the VW Polo, are being stolen, police have noted that more sophisticated vehicles, such as the Toyota Fortuner and the Dakar Hilux, have recently been targeted,”
Naidu warned that areas of concern are Humewood, Walmer and Mount Road.
“In light of these incidents, police are urging owners of expensive vehicles to exercise extra caution and take proactive measures to safeguard their vehicles.
“We advise drivers to consider installing additional security features to deter theft attempts. Also, when parking your vehicle, choose well-lit and populated areas that are less likely to attract thieves. Always remain vigilant of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity immediately,” she concluded.
