An investigation is currently underway following the alleged drowning of siblings, Iviwe Zakumba (3) and Botwelethu Zakumba (7) on February 3, at the reservoir dam in the Kwanobuhle area.

According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, it is alleged that at approximately 18:30 on February 3, community members heard screams from children in distress at the reservoir dam at the corner of 10th Avenue and 1st Avenue in Kwanobuhle.

She said that upon arrival, the community found one child, a boy named Iviwe.

“The father arrived and rushed him to Laetitia Bam Hospital, but he passed away on arrival,” said Janse van Rensburg.

She said that Iviwe’s older sister, Botwelethu was allegedly inside a hole next to the reservoir dam, where repairs had been done a while back, and the hole was filled with water.

“SAPS divers were called for assistance, and they recovered the body of the girl,” said Janse van Rensburg.
