AFTER bringing more than 7 000 babies into the word, one of Port Elizabeth’s most loved gynaecologists will be hanging up the white coat in June.
Dr André Ferreira (60) who completed his studies at the University of Stellenbosch in 1989, has worked with approximately 29 000 women over his career spanning 29 years.
“I had an interest in gynaecology since back in school.
“I found the ability to deliver babies a rewarding occupation,” said Ferreira.
One of the highlights of his career was being able to deliver a baby for a patient who had previously suffered 13 miscarriages.
Ferreira’s retirement is bittersweet for Ferreira’s team along with his patients, who will miss his expertise but also want him to put his feet up after all his hard work. Office manager for his practice at Life St Georges Hospital Maureen Prinsloo described Ferreira as a “patient-holic” as he always strived for the best of his patients’ well-being.
All his existing patients will henceforth be treated at Fembryo at Life St Georges.
Ferreira has three adult children, two of whom are doctors and one who is still studying at university. His wife, Doreen, described him as “the most humble man.”
She is happy that he will be able to spend more time at home, as his busy schedule had been part of their family’s lives for many years.
“There were times when we would be having a braai and he would get a call to go and deliver a baby.
“He really had a passion and love for what he did,” she said.
Ferreira said he would take time after his retirement to focus on exercising, particularly cycling and hiking, which are activities he hardly had time for when he was running his practice.
