THE Giving Them Wings Foundation, a non-profit company that adopts schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, has launched its first fund-raiser, a 5km fun run in aid of its 2020 programme for schools.
At these schools, they develop sustainable living projects such as gardening and recycling.
The run will start and finish at the Walker Drive Shopping Centre on September 8. Registration will start at 06:30 and the race will start at 07:30.
A professional fitness instructor will conduct a 20-minute fitness and stretch session just before the prize-giving ceremony.
Tickets are available for R50 for adults and R20 for teens aged 12 to 17 and are available at Web-tickets or any Pick n Pay store.
Although the event is envisioned as a fun family activity, the first adult to cross the finish line will win a four-day all-expenses-paid expedition trip to Lesotho from November 29 to December 2. Second and third place will receive a hamper each. The first teen to cross the finish line wins a R2 000 cash prize and special hampers go to second and third place winners.
Medals of participation will be handed out to the first 200 people to cross the finish line.
Also, the Giving Them Wings Foundation is proud to announce actress Jo da Silva as their 2019-2020 ambassador.
“I came across Giving Them Wings quite by accident. As an educationalist, I was struck and disarmed by the work they do in schools, especially in the communities where such intervention is most necessary.
“After doing my homework, I found Giving Them Wings was an organisation I would be proud to work and advocate for going forward,” Da Silva said. “I know a lot has gone into putting the race together and although I won’t make it, we have done our best to ensure there are wonderful prizes and sponsors to ensure a successful annual event. I hope the fund-raiser receives the support of many in PE.”
