SOCCER fans saw three of the big guns struggle to register their dramatic wins during the Port Elizabeth East Football Association (PEEFA) Mayoral Cup preliminary round, when they were up against the sides that gave them a run for their money at Veeplaas Turf Stadium on Sunday.

Real Aces had to raise the bar when they defeated Rainbow City 4-3 on penalties after their game ended in a 1-1 draw.

United Brothers played into 1-1 draw against Young Aces, which meant that the game had to be decided on a penalty shootout, with Brothers winning 4-3 on penalties.

It was a breathtaking contest for fans when Peace Lovers faced Mighty Birds, but ultimately Lovers emerged as winners with a 1-0 victory.

According to PEEFA secretary, Luyanda Ncwadi, PEEEFA Mayoral Cup quarter­finals will be played at Veeplaas Turf Stadium on Saturday, while the semi-finals will start at 10:00 and the finals will be played at Veeplaas Turf Stadium on Sunday.

The PEEFA Mayoral Cup Juniors League also started yesterday and will conclude at the Veeplaas Turf Stadium on Sunday, March 1.
