HAVING achieved their initial five-year goal by winning the 2019 SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Women’s Regional League title and the provincial play-offs, Motherwell-based Volcano Ladies’ Football Club (LFC) are now aiming even higher.
According to the chairperson and coach of Volcano LFC, Mzuvikile Reggie Khesi, his team showed character to be where they are.
Khesi revealed that his club’s success was attributed to discipline, determination and dedication.
Volcano LFC now campaign in the Sasol League after winning the play-offs in January.
The Motherwell side was established in 2015 and they campaigned in the regional league for three years.
During those years, Volcano LFC regularly finished in top eight of the SAFA NMB Women’s Regional League table.
Khesi said, “The road to success was not an easy one because there were some challenges. We managed to go through the hardships that were in front of us. I see that as a spotlight to my girls. They showed character and they showed a never say die spirit at all times. Our five-year plan was to see our team playing in the top-flight football. This makes me a happy man because we have achieved our goal.”
Khesi revealed that their next five-year plan was to produce one or more players who will play in the national teams.
“Our players know what it takes to win. Now we are close to playing in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). I will be a happy man to see some of my girls in the national team,” Khesi said. “Therefore, I will never let them down because I want them to reach their highest levels of potential.
“It is difficult for me to single out one player out of the team as a most talented player. These kids are so talented in so much that they all work to different roles on the field of play; that is what I like about them.
“Let me thank our sponsors, Orion Engineered Carbons, for their unwavering support to Volcano LFC. They played a fundamental role in our success. Women’s sport is not that well supported but Orion Engineered Carbons have made things go smoothly,” said Khesi.
