BLOEMFONTEIN – The police in the Bloemspruit area in Bloemfontein are appealing for public assistance to trace a potential female suspect in connection with the concealment of birth, following the discovery of a baby’s body part in Bloemside Phase II.
Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane, spokesperson for the Free State polices, said police were alerted after a passer-by saw a baby’s head being dragged by some dogs through the street yesterday -Wednesday morning. He said members who attended to the scene found a decapitated head without a body.
Covane said an investigation was going regarding the gruesome act, the tracing of the suspect including search for the remains of the infant’s body in the settlement which forms part of the Mangaung Metro Municipality.
“Local Criminal Record Centre experts, Emergency Medical Service, and Free State Forensic Pathology Services personnel were also summoned to process the scene,” said Covane.
MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport Jabu Mbalula said in a statement that he has instructed the police to intensify their efforts by appointing the best detectives to trace the mother and bring her to book. “It is important that the mother is quickly found to get to the bottom of this matter. Our public health institutions are available for women to address unwanted pregnancies. We encourage them to make use of these facilities,” he said.
Mbalula has expressed deep shock. “I have come across terrible things in my life, but nothing comes close to this. In all my life, never have I heard of dogs dragging a human head on the street.”
