BLOEMFONTEIN – The Bloemfontein police are investigating an inquest after a suspected drug dealer (33) allegedly leapt to his death from the second floor of Kenlin Court in Douglas Street in downtown Bloemfontein. The incident reportedly happened early on Friday (18 September).

Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane, provincial spokesperson for the Free State police, said the incident occurred at about 11:00 while members of the Bloemfontein Police K9 unit were investigating the source of drugs after the suspect’s arrest for possession of the substance.

“As the members stopped in Douglas Street, an unidentified man ran into the Kenlin Court building. Members gave chase, but he ran up the stairs and reached the door of a unit. He then opened the door and quickly locked the security door behind him,” said Covane.

Covane said members reported that during this time, they suddenly heard people making a loud noise from outside the building. “When they stepped outside to investigate, they noticed that the man who had fled into the flats was lying motionless on the pavement,” he said.

Covane said crime scene experts summoned to the scene declared the man deceased. “The key to the security door was found underneath his body, where he had fallen to his death,” said Covane, adding that an inquest docket was registered at Park Road police station for further investigation.
