Over 7,5 tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste) was collected in a single day during a recent event in Mothibistad, Kuruman.
The initiative yielded significant environmental results, with 7 592,4 kg of e-waste collected through 114 individual transactions.
For the event, residents were encouraged to clear their homes of redundant electrical appliances and devices, receiving vouchers or payment in kind as a reward for their participation in the circular economy.
The event in April took place in collaboration with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality.
Speaking at the event, deputy minister Bernice Swarts expressed her gratitude to the E-Waste Recycling Authority (ERA NPC) and Get Metal for their logistical support and commitment to adhering to rigorous environmental procedures.
ERA NPC is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the collection and responsible recycling of electronic waste. By bridging the gap between producers, government, and the public, ERA NPC works to protect the environment and support a sustainable, inclusive economy through the management of Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment and Lighting (WEEEL).
The majority of WEEEL can be recycled โ a good rule of thumb is, if it is battery powered or powered by electricity, it is likely to be considered WEEEL.
