Dagga worth more than R7 million, hidden in mobile toilets which were transported on a truck, was seized just outside Colesberg. The driver, a 37-year-old foreign national, was arrested.

This follows an inspection on Wednesday 22 July at approximately 13:50 at the weighbridge next to the N1 outside Colesberg. Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien, police spokesperson, said Provincial Traffic officials stopped a white Foton truck transporting mobile toilets after receiving information that it was being used to conceal dagga.

During the inspection, they detected a strong smell of dagga coming from one of the toilets and found a large bag inside.

Police were called to the scene. After a thorough search, seven bulk-wrapped bags with a total weight of 379,3 kilograms which contained suspected dagga were discovered. It is valued at approximately R7 586 000.

The driver was arrested by members of the South African Police Service in Colesberg and charged with dealing in dagga. The truck and trailer were also confiscated. He is expected to appear in the Colesberg Magistrates’ Court soon.

The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, commended the officials for their vigilance and swift response, saying the seizure shows the value of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in disrupting drug trafficking.

She also stated that the South African Police Service will continue working with partners to stop the movement of illicit drugs across provincial borders.
