Kalahari Sub-district celebrates grand slam on bowling greens

The 2026 Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) Mini Districts took centre stage in Vryburg this past weekend as the four sub-districts came together to battle for provincial bragging rights and the coveted Mini Districts titles.

The NCB District is divided into four sub-districts – Kimberley, Intervaal, Kalahari, and Conroy.

Each sub-district selects its respective top 12 men and women bowlers to represent their region in a fiercely contested annual competition that determines the district champions.

The hosting duties rotate between the sub-districts and in 2026 it was Intervaal’s turn to welcome the province’s finest bowlers.

At the Vryburg Bowling Club bowlers were greeted by sunny skies during Saturday morning’s opening ceremony, but the weather soon turned chilly and overcast, conditions that would remain for the rest of the tournament.

Despite the cold, the standard of bowls on display was anything but.

Teams seeking to make history

The Kimberley men’s team entered the tournament chasing a fourth consecutive title, while the Kalahari women were also seeking to make history with a fourth straight championship.

Conroy’s men arrived hoping to capture their first-ever Mini Districts crown, while both Intervaal and Kalahari were determined to return their names to the men’s trophy after recent near misses.

Following the opening two rounds on Saturday, the women’s competition was delicately poised, with only a single point separating the teams and all four sub-districts in contention.

The men’s tournament, however, began to take shape as Kalahari and Conroy established themselves as the front-runners. Kimberley and Intervaal found themselves needing maximum points in Sunday’s final round, along with favourable results elsewhere, if they were to have any chance of lifting the trophy.

Conroy’s dream of a maiden title remained very much alive, while Kimberley’s hopes of securing a fourth consecutive championship appeared increasingly unlikely.

Complete fourth consecutive triumph

On Sunday in the women’s division, Kalahari and Kimberley emerged victorious in their respective encounters.

However, Kalahari had already done enough to secure the overall title and complete a remarkable fourth consecutive triumph. Kimberley finished as runners-up, followed by Intervaal in third place and Conroy in fourth.

The men’s title race remained on a knife-edge until the closing stages. Kalahari secured crucial points against Intervaal, while Kimberley mounted a spirited fightback by taking valuable points from Conroy. Although Conroy managed to win two of their games, it was not enough to hold off the Kalahari challenge.

With the final calculations it was Kalahari who emerged victorious, reclaiming the men’s title and ensuring a memorable double celebration for the sub-district.

Combined with the women’s success, Kalahari completed a remarkable “grand slam” weekend.

The Kimberley men’s team had to settle for third place, while Intervaal finished in fourth.

  • The NCB management team expressed its gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the tournament. The 2027 tournament will be hosted by Conroy.
